Revealing Wales: series 2 continues RSAW’s celebration of the nation’s great buildings and structures. The intention of this second series of four short films is to introduce new voices and promote greater awareness and understanding of buildings that enable and support learning, wellbeing, community and sustainability in Wales.

Maggie’s Swansea & Maggie’s Cardiff

Safety, security, warmth, comfort – all of those things, that we all seek in our own homes – are the feelings that you sense immediately on setting foot in any Maggie’s centre… Putting uplifting buildings at the service of people who are at their most vulnerable, Maggie’s asserts our need for inspiring spaces, whatever our means and needs.

Through the lens of her own experiences, Bami Adenipekun, author, life coach and Maggie’s ambassador, introduces the two Maggie’s cancer care centres in Wales, designed by Kisho Kurokawa and Dow Jones Architects.

Centre for Alternative Technology | Canolfan y Dechnoleg Amgen

Sustainable designer and builder, and Centre for Alternative Technology alumnus, Sophie Zara James is our guide to the inspirational buildings and innovative educational programme located within CAT’s seven-acre site in north Wales:

CAT advocates for a Zero Carbon future and demonstrates solutions and technologies in many ways, including hands-on teaching and learning. For 20 years CAT graduates, many now active architects, have been advocates for greener ways of building.

Grange Pavilion | Pafiliwn Grange

Grange Pavilion seems simultaneously stylish and modest – exciting enough to capture one’s interest and attention, but not so flashy that it obscures its setting…

The building is less an enclosed space within the park, more a gentle enclosing of the park itself – an extension and development of an open space captured and supported by the building’s structure.

Ruba Sivagnanam, a Councillor in the Vale of Glamorgan and Senior Caseworker for Stephen Doughty MP, provides a unique insight into the history and design of Grangetown’s Grange Pavilion, realised by Benham Architects in collaboration with IBI Group.

National Waterfront Museum | Amgueddfa Genedlaethol y Glannau

Steph Mastoris, Director of the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, introduces the work of the museum and explains how architect Chris Wilkinson’s design combines old and new structures to connects the city to the sea.

In designing the New Gallery wing of the museum, Chris was asked to ensure that the south facing elevation has a barrier against the solar gain. So, as a result, you have this fascinating contrast between the north elevation, which is all glass, and the south elevation, which has this astounding and quite abstract wall of three different types of Welsh slate.
